A romantic Harlaxton Manor wedding in Grantham filled with thoughtful details, heartfelt moments and unforgettable portraits of Charlotte & Niall.

Published May 2026

Some wedding venues are beautiful. Then there's Harlaxton Manor. Between its grand architecture, peaceful gardens and incredible interiors, it's easy to see why so many couples fall in love with it. Charlotte and Niall filled every corner of it with thoughtful touches that reflected who they are as people, making this Harlaxton Manor wedding feel every bit as personal as it was spectacular.

The beginning

The Meeting

Charlotte and Niall's story began back in 2017 while studying at the University of York. As luck would have it, they were given rooms right next to each other, making it almost impossible not to become friends.

Although they clicked straight away, romance wasn't quite on the timetable yet. Their friendship quietly grew over the next few years before they officially started dating in 2020. Looking at them together now, always laughing, looking out for one another and somehow making everyone around them feel comfortable too, it feels difficult to imagine it happening any other way.

The Engagement

Their proposal took place somewhere that had already become part of their story.

Ever since they started dating, Charlotte and Niall have made a tradition of returning to York every year, usually in February. During one of those visits, Niall planned to propose while they were walking along York City Walls overlooking the Minster.

There was only one tiny problem. It started raining. Charlotte promptly ran for cover... straight past the exact spot where Niall had planned to ask the question.

Fortunately, the proposal still happened, making one of their favourite cities even more meaningful than it already was.

Wedding Planning

Charlotte and Niall put so much thought into every decision they made throughout their wedding planning, and their advice to future couples reflects that beautifully:

“Be intentional with your decisions. Don't panic buy things or do something just because everybody else is doing it. Prepare as much in advance as you can, and accept that there are some things you can't do until much later in the process. Most importantly, don't stress about anything on the day itself. What will be, will be.”

Honestly? It's difficult to argue with any of that.

Every part of their wedding felt considered without ever feeling over-planned. It was clear they had focused on creating a day that genuinely reflected them, rather than ticking boxes.

Getting Ready Moments

Meet Niall

While I spent the morning with Charlotte, my assistant photographer David joined Niall as he got ready at Harlaxton Manor.

There was a lovely calm atmosphere throughout the morning. No rushing around, no unnecessary stress. Just excited conversations, final preparations and plenty of smiles as everyone got ready for the day ahead. One of my favourite photographs from the morning is Niall smiling while his boutonnière is being pinned into place. It's such a simple moment, but it says so much about how relaxed and happy he was.

Niall wore a light stone three-piece suit from Hawes & Curtis, paired with soft champagne tones that tied in perfectly with the rest of the wedding palette. It suited both the grandeur of Harlaxton Manor and the gentle, romantic feel Charlotte and Niall had envisioned.

If you've seen any of my previous Real Wedding Stories, you'll know I always start with the guys first because they get ready a lot quicker (sorry girls, it's true!) and it's much easier for them to take their jacket off again and relax if they want to!

Meet Charlotte

Charlotte spent the morning getting ready inside Harlaxton Manor with her closest family and friends, and it was one of those preparations that felt full of excitement from the very beginning.

There were lovely little moments happening everywhere you looked. Matching pyjamas with the bridal party. Her mum helping her into her dress. The anticipation quietly building as the ceremony drew closer.

Charlotte looked absolutely timeless in her gown from Wed2B, with elegant hair styling by Amy Lou Jackson and beautifully natural make-up by Courtney Broadhead. Her bouquet and floral arrangements by Petal & Stalk tied everything together perfectly, using soft neutrals, muted pinks and eucalyptus to complement the bronze and champagne colour palette they'd chosen.

One detail that particularly touched me was Charlotte wearing her late Grandma's necklace. It was one of several thoughtful ways they kept family close throughout the day, alongside a beautiful "Generations of Love" display featuring photographs of parents and grandparents.

Before the ceremony, Charlotte also made a stunning staircase entrance, and shared a private first look with her Nan. Because her Nan couldn't manage the stairs, they thoughtfully arranged the reveal outside the ceremony room beforehand instead. It became one of the most emotional moments of the entire morning, and one I know Charlotte will treasure forever.

The Ceremony

Charlotte and Niall chose to hold a civil ceremony inside Harlaxton Manor's breathtaking Great Hall, and what an incredible setting it is.

Towering carved oak panelling, marble flooring, ornate stonework and sparkling chandeliers create a room that somehow feels both wonderfully grand and surprisingly intimate once it's filled with family and friends.

As Charlotte made her entrance to the sound of harpist Alejandro Barnett, Niall's composure lasted all of about two seconds before emotion took over. Watching him fight back tears while seeing his bride for the first time was one of those beautifully genuine moments that no amount of planning can create.

After exchanging their vows, the newlyweds walked back down the aisle to huge applause before heading outside to celebrate with guests beneath glorious sunshine and a shower of confetti.

Cocktail Hour

Following the ceremony, everyone gathered outside to enjoy the warm spring weather while Charlotte and Niall finally had the chance to soak everything in as newlyweds. Everyone cheered for them as they made their showstopping confetti exit.

The gardens at Harlaxton Manor are perfect for this part of the day. Guests naturally spread out across the grounds, catching up over drinks and playing Wedding Bingo while enjoying views of one of Lincolnshire's most iconic wedding venues.

Throughout the afternoon, harpist Alejandro Barnett and singer Heidi Gordon created a wonderfully relaxed soundtrack to the celebrations, adding to the elegant atmosphere without ever overpowering it.

When asked why they chose Harlaxton Manor, Charlotte's answer couldn't have been simpler.

"I went to a wedding at Harlaxton on my 18th birthday and absolutely fell in love with the venue. I wasn't sure if Niall would like it too, so we went to view it together. He loved it, and once I saw it again, we both knew it was the one. We viewed a few other venues before and after just to make sure, but nothing compared."

Family Photos

After the excitement of the confetti exit and drinks reception, it was time to gather everyone together for family photographs.

This part of the day often gets a reputation for being a little formal, but it doesn't have to be. Charlotte and Niall had put plenty of thought into their photo list beforehand, and with Maid of Honour Jessica proudly taking on the role of "Photo Wrangler", everything ran incredibly smoothly.

One of my favourite moments was entirely for selfish reasons. The day was gloriously sunny... and also gloriously hot. At one point I ended up standing underneath David's drone while it hovered overhead, purely because the downdraft acted like a tiny portable air conditioner. It gave everyone a good laugh and provided a very welcome few seconds of relief before we carried on.

The gardens at Harlaxton Manor are ideal for group photographs too. There's plenty of space, beautiful light and enough distance from the main celebrations that family members aren't distracted every few seconds by another tray of drinks appearing.

Before long, everyone was free to head back to celebrating, which is exactly how family photographs should work.

Wedding Breakfast

As guests made their way into the spectacular State Dining Room, they were greeted by yet another side of Harlaxton Manor's personality.

Crystal chandeliers, towering ceilings, ornate fireplaces and elegant décor created an incredible setting without feeling overwhelming. Charlotte and Niall's styling complemented the room beautifully. Soft florals by Petal & Stalk, muted linens and bronze accents worked effortlessly against the grandeur of the space, proving that sometimes less really is more.

The styling itself came together with help from Stylish Weddings (DIY Hire), creating a timeless look that echoed the romantic atmosphere they'd imagined from the very beginning.

One of the loveliest touches throughout the reception wasn't something guests could admire from across the room. It was something they found waiting at their seats.

Charlotte and Niall had handwritten personal notes for every single guest, each one sharing a favourite memory together. It must have taken hours to write them all, but it perfectly summed up the kind of couple they are. Thoughtful, generous and determined to make everyone feel genuinely appreciated.

Dinner was absolutely delicious too. I was lucky enough to enjoy the beef while David tucked into the chicken, both served with garlic mash, seasonal vegetables and plenty of gravy. Wedding photographers definitely notice good food, and this was one of those meals that keeps you smiling for the rest of the afternoon.

The speeches followed, and they were every bit as heartfelt as you'd expect from this family. Niall, his brother, Charlotte's dad and finally Charlotte's sister all spoke, but according to Charlotte it was her sister's speech that really got everyone reaching for the tissues.

Newlywed Photoshoot

Normally I'd sneak away with my couples a little earlier, but the weather had other ideas. The sunshine was absolutely relentless throughout the afternoon, so instead we waited until around 8:30pm when the light had softened into that gorgeous golden glow photographers quietly dream about. It was 100% worth the wait though.

Harlaxton Manor transforms during golden hour. The warm evening light wraps itself around the stonework, the gardens become beautifully peaceful after guests head inside, and suddenly it feels as though the entire estate belongs to the two of you.

We wandered through some of my favourite spots around the grounds, taking our time and letting Charlotte and Niall simply enjoy a few quiet moments together after such a busy day. Those little pockets of calm are often some of my favourite parts of any wedding. For ten or fifteen minutes, the schedule disappears, nobody needs anything from you, and you simply get to be newly married.

Looking through these photographs now, I don't think you can tell they were taken after such a long day. Charlotte and Niall were still smiling, still laughing together and still completely wrapped up in one another. Those final portraits ended up becoming some of my favourites from the entire wedding.

Cake cut

Another wonderfully personal detail came in the form of their wedding cake. Rather than ordering one from a professional cake designer, Charlotte's mum lovingly made it herself.

Standing proudly beside the elegant floral arrangements, it looked every bit at home inside Harlaxton Manor. Knowing it had been created by family made the moment feel even more meaningful, and it's one of those details that guests often remember long after the wedding itself.

Sometimes the most memorable parts of a wedding aren't the grand gestures. They're the ones made with love.

First dance

Charlotte and Niall shared their first dance to I Guess I'm In Love by Clinton Kane. Charlotte first heard the song while sitting in a café and immediately messaged Niall telling him he had to listen to it. Originally they'd planned to dance to Camera by Ed Sheeran, but once they'd discovered Clinton Kane's song, the decision became easy.

"No particular reason. I was sat in a café when I heard it for the first time. I immediately messaged Niall like, 'You have to listen to this!'"

With singer Heidi Gordon performing the song live, it became a beautifully intimate moment before the evening celebrations gathered pace.

Straight afterwards, while many guests headed for the dancefloor, Charlotte and Niall slipped away with me to make the most of the beautiful evening light outside.

Reception

As daylight finally faded, the atmosphere shifted from elegant celebration to relaxed family party. The evening reflected Charlotte and Niall's personalities perfectly.

There was live music, plenty of laughter and one particularly brilliant tradition that had everyone smiling. Their family dance to Nelly the Elephant wasn't really a dance at all. Charlotte described it as more of a family "stomp", and honestly, that feels much more accurate.

There were inflatable instruments for guests to wave along to AC/DC, a nod to Charlotte's dad's favourite band, and the whole evening felt wonderfully unpretentious. Nobody was trying to impress anyone. They were simply having fun together.

Sometimes that's exactly what makes a wedding unforgettable.

Wedding Photography at Harlaxton Manor

As a wedding photographer, I get to experience venues rather differently to most guests. I'm there before anyone arrives, watching the morning light spill through the windows. I see the quiet moments while people are getting ready, the excitement before the ceremony begins and the way a venue changes as the day unfolds.

Harlaxton Manor is one of those rare places that never feels repetitive. Every corner offers something completely different. The magnificent Great Hall brings incredible grandeur to a ceremony. The conservatory feels light, peaceful and almost Mediterranean. The formal gardens provide beautiful symmetry for group photographs, while tucked-away pathways and terraces create wonderfully intimate spaces for newlywed portraits.

Then there's golden hour. As the evening sun drops lower across the estate, the stone takes on a warm glow that completely transforms the grounds. It's one of those venues where waiting a little longer for portraits genuinely pays off, and Charlotte and Niall's gallery is the perfect example of that.

Of course, a beautiful venue only provides the backdrop. It's the people who truly bring it to life, and Charlotte and Niall filled Harlaxton Manor with warmth, laughter and so many thoughtful details that it never once felt like they were getting married in a stately home. It simply felt like their home for the day.

Charlotte and Niall's wedding was a beautiful reminder that the little things are often the biggest things. A first look with Nan. A necklace carrying the memory of Grandma. Handwritten notes for every guest. A cake made by Mum. Songs chosen because they meant something. Family traditions that made everyone laugh. Those are the moments that stay with you.

Thank you both for trusting me to tell your story. It was an absolute privilege to spend the day with you, and I genuinely couldn't be happier for you both.
