Finding the ‘Click’ – How to Choose A Wedding Photographer

Published Oct 2023

When it comes to your wedding day, there are few things as important as finding the perfect photographer to capture those precious moments. After all, your wedding photos will be cherished for a lifetime, so it’s essential to choose a wedding photographer who is right for you. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice.

What should we consider?

1) Start early

Don’t leave the task of finding a wedding photographer until the last minute; photographers get booked out very quickly because unlike other vendors such as cakemakers or venue stylists; we can only take on one wedding per date.

Start your search early to ensure you have enough time to research and meet with potential photographers. This will also give you a chance to see their portfolios and get a feel for their style.

2) Determine your style

Every photographer has their own unique style, so it’s important to determine what style resonates with you and your partner. Do you prefer traditional, posed shots, or do you lean towards a more candid and documentary-style approach? Knowing your preferred style will help you narrow down your options.

3) Set a budget

Wedding photography can vary greatly in price, so it’s important to set a flexible minimum/maximum budget in your mind beforehand.

Keep in mind that wedding photography is an investment, and while it may be tempting to cut costs, remember that these photos will be the lasting memories of your special day.

4) Do your research

Take the time to research different wedding photographers in your area. Look at their websites, social media pages, and online reviews to get a sense of their work and reputation.

5) Scout the portfolios

They say an image is worth a thousand words, and they’re right – but when you’re looking at the photos, really lean into them! Does everyone look relaxed and natural? Do they feel comfortable? What emotions do you feel when you’re looking at them? Are the angles flattering?

Also; pay attention to the consistency and quality of their portfolio.

6) Create a shortlist

A notebook or spreadsheet is ideal for making notes on what you like about each photographer’s website, how they come across as well as potential questions you’d like to ask them. Which brings us to the next step…

7) Set up some meetings

Give them a call, meet for a coffee or arrange a video chat for a real conversation; that way you’ll be able to understand who they are and what they’re about more freely in a more casual setting. You can also swing by the local wedding shows or open days for a chance to meet and greet with various suppliers.

Another option is to book an engagement shoot if the budget permits; nothing will give you a better idea of what the photographer is like!

8) Finding the ‘click’

The photographer’s personality should play a huge role in the selection process. This person is going to be your right hand and second shadow on your wedding day. Make sure you choose someone who you really feel you’d get along well with.

9) Editing styles

Editing styles vary greatly across photographers with many in the industry outsourcing their editing to others. I would advise to choose a wedding photographer that does their own editing as you’re guaranteed to get their signature colour grading style; whereas their regular freelance editor could easily be too busy with other projects.

Also remember that your venue, the weather and the time of year will all play a vital part in how your photos look.

10) Reviews and recommendations

Talking to friends or family can really help you choose a wedding photographer. It’s always better to hire someone when someone you know has had a good experience with them before; but if not, check out the reviews on their websites and social pages to see what other clients have said about working with them. This will validate the authenticity of the photographer and give you a more in-depth and overarching view of who they are and how they operate.

11) Review contracts carefully

Before signing any contracts, make sure to review them carefully. Pay attention to details such as the shoot duration, the number of edited photos you will receive and any additional fees or expenses. It’s important to have a clear understanding of what you are getting for your investment.

Contracts are legally enforceable and are in effect immediately upon signing. If you don’t understand any part of their Terms of Service; be sure to ask them for written clarification beforehand.  This protects both you and the photographer and ensures everyone is going forward exactly on the same page with a happy and clear understanding of the agreement for services.

12) Are they an LGBT+ safe space?

Not really as much of an issue nowadays; but definitely something to consider even if it’s just to get a deeper perspective on the photographer’s character; especially if there are any guests in the LGBT+ community attending.

I get enquiries now and then that will say something along the lines of “we’re two brides, is that ok?” and it breaks my heart that they have to ask! – but it is a valid point, and that’s why I’m mentioning it here.

Sadly the entire populous hasn’t caught up with the rest of us, but for the record you are absolutely in a safe space with me whatever the dynamic of your relationship; love is love right?

13) Trust your instincts

Ultimately, trust your instincts when you choose a wedding photographer. If you feel a connection with a particular photographer and their work speaks to you, it’s likely that they are the right fit for you and your partner. Remember, your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and you deserve a photographer who will capture it beautifully.

I really hope this helped!
